What many may not realize during the Olympic Games, is that the Israeli Olympic Team athletes will all have instant access to their medical and training information.

LifeOnKey, together with The Wingate Institute, Israel’s National Centre for Physical Education and Sport, and Israel’s Meir Medical Center, the medical center and caregiver for Israel’s Olympic Team, has enabled Israeli’s Olympic athletes to have on-demand access to their medical information.

“This innovative and collaborative project began three years ago to computerize the medical records of the Israeli Olympic team for Beijing 2008, making them the first and only team in the world to have their medical information available 24/7 in a virtual file, called a personal health record (PHR),” said Donna Halperin, president LifeOnKey.

Each file contains an athlete’s personal medical data (medications, medical history, lab results, X rays etc.) collected from different medical institutions (hospitals, HMO’s, family physicians, specialists, etc.) as well as athletic achievements, training schedules, dietary calendar, nutrition requirements, etc.

All athletes have instant, online access to their medical file and can upload their own data from external medical tools, such as blood pressure and pulse monitors. Additionally, the medical file can be read in different languages, and can be downloaded to PDA’s, memory sticks and USB bracelets, so the athletes can have their medical information with them at all times.

“If an athlete is injured during the Olympic games, all of the medical history will be readily available for the local physicians to provide the best possible treatment,” said Halperin.

The risk of injury follows professional athletes during their whole career, and it has been proven that, in reality — injuries return. During injury, every decision the physician makes has direct impact on the athlete’s career, so it becomes extremely important to have all the medical history available to the physician, enabling to make the correct decision.

Beyond the Bejing Olympics, the athletes will be able to continually manage their health and medical information, and keep track of their diet, training progress and achievements.

I’m seven months pregnant with my second child. And although I didn’t have gestational diabetes with my first child, I do have it with this pregnancy. Sure, I was a little concerned when I found out, but I knew that with vigilant monitoring of my blood glucose levels, my baby and I would be ok. As an LOK employee, I’m familiar with our personal health management products. I already use the LOK for Pregnancy Module, which gives pregnant women, like me the ability to track their condition during the entire 40 weeks of pregnancy. Once the baby is born, LOK will automatically generate the newborn’s health profile, which includes pregnancy history, and fetal and genetic information that will accompany the individual through his/her lifetime. It’s great to be able to see my ultrasounds as well as the growth chart of my unborn baby. Very cool!

This isn’t my ultrasound, but you can see how one would look in the LOK for Pregnancy module: Please click on each graphic to enlarge and see the detail.

Besides the LOK for Pregnancy module, I also use our LOK for High-Risk Pregnancy product, which enables me to monitor, chart, and see how my diet impacts my blood sugar levels. This is vital to me—with gestational diabetes I need to keep my levels under control or my unborn baby’s health could be at risk. I’ve been using the LOK for Diabetes since I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes in the first trimester—so far every thing has been under control. Thankfully, I’ve had no problems and the reason why is because I closely watch my levels—and our health management tools make it so easy. The charts and graphs are clear and easy for me to read and understand.

For instance, I’ve learned that when I eat sushi my blood levels are higher—so I know that I cannot eat too much sushi. And I also know that during the weekends, when my stress levels are lower, my glucose levels are more stable too. Aside from having gestational diabetes, I’m not a diabetic so all this monitoring was something new for me. I received a glucometer from my clinic and typically the only way I could get the data is when I go to the clinic.

But as you can imagine, making those visits are inconvenient. Plus, I can’t see how what I’m eating is affecting my glucose levels until those visits—and that’s not exactly the best thing for my baby. But with this particular LOK product, I can download data directly into my personal health file and track my levels much more closely—I know instantly what they are before and after every meal and can track them much more closely then I would if I was waiting for my weekly or monthly office visits.

Everything is tracked and I can monitor what I eat and see how each meal impacts my levels—if they are too high or too low—I know right away and this gives me peace of mind knowing my baby is safe. What I like best about the product is that I’m in control and I can check my settings for each meal by checking them one hour before I eat and then again after I eat. Another thing that is very important is that I can enter the specific glucose levels that are safe for me into my health file so I can see if my levels are too high or too low. My doctor can give me the general glucose level parameters for gestational diabetes or he can tailor these parameters according to my individual health situation.

Having this information right away is much better than depending on the clinic for a printout of my levels. The best part is that I have all the data and all my medical information with me at all times—since it’s all easily accessible online. Through my LOK file, I can print out a “Health Book” with all my important medical information, which includes all the information I have compiled through the LOK for Pregnancy Module, as well as my gestational diabetes information. I can take it with me to the hospital when it’s time to deliver my baby. This enables me to control my medical information and not the clinic. So far, my experience with this product has been positive. I look forward to updating you with new features and my experiences with them.

All the best,

When LifeOnKey ™ was launched, Dr. Linda Harnevo, as well as the rest of the launch team, realized that the LifeOnKey platform would have enormous potential in many different applications.

I came to that very same conclusion when I had my first chance to look at the LifeOnKey ™ technology. Consequently, when I joined LifeOnKey last fall, my first order of business was to work with the LOK team to conceive and develop a LifeOnKey strategy and product-line for women and girls.

Why are women and girls a priority? Well, there are three, very compelling reasons:

Women are 80% of family caregivers, whether for their immediate families, the families of their children or spouse, or of other loved ones.

As a result, most adult women are, on a daily basis, making important health and medical decisions, in a way that their male counterparts hardly ever do. This is true regardless of income level; whether the woman works outside the home; and even whether those cared-for live close-by or far-away.

Women are the primary, health-care decision makers in most families.

Did you know that, in order to help make decisions about health and medical treatments, or providers, or other medical or healthcare services, over 80% of Internet research is undertaken by adult women caring for others?

Then, almost all the time, these women make the arrangements for the care they’ve concluded is best; manage the subsequent daily decision-making–from the littlest issues to the biggest ones; arrange the logistics, again both big and small; and, at the same time, continue to provide the love and attention their families need.

Women have a unique health lifecycle, so that while women share many health and medical experiences with men, the female reproductive health experience makes our lives very different.

Whether, for example, the female reproductive-health experience is the onset of menstruation, or the decision to become pregnant, or the experience of menopause, women–at all stages of their lives– look for assistance, support and guidance

The capacity of the LOK technology to address these challenges in the lives of girls and women, by creating the universal ability to keep track of one’s medical and health experience-anywhere-will improve lives, beginning with the girls and women the LOK WGHS was designed for.

Consequently, our goals for the LOK WGHS are to:

build every girl’s and woman’s individual capacity to manage her life more healthfully, and, in the process, create life-affirming strategies for herself;

create unique women’s and girls’ communities, across all borders of technology, and girls’ and women’s health and life experience, nationhood, space, time, race and ethnicity;

provide a unique dataset for research on health and medical problems affecting women and girls; and, in partnership with other female-health-focused organizations;

enable girls, women and their families to live the best lives possible.

Here is how the LOK Women’s and Girls’ Health Series is organized:

LOK WGHS is organized—as an accompaniment to the basic LifeOnKey ™ software —according to the phases of the female reproductive lifecycle—girlhood, fertility and maturity—in order to:

recognize and provide health guidance and tools for life-changing points in that cycle, as well as for illnesses that women and girls’ experience uniquely, or more frequently than men, and to provide

in-depth modules for certain normative, female conditions, such as pregnancy.

Consider this:

As CEOS, would-be Presidents and other leaders in the U.S. and global health care, political and business worlds increasingly recognize the lifesaving importance of electronic health records, success in this enormous marketplace will depend upon the everyday decisions women make.

It is in this context that LOK will launch the LOK WGHS, which will make it possible for girls and women to improve their lives and opportunities, by helping them manage their health and wellness.

–Rebecca Sive, Vice President, Women’s Network

U.S. LifeOnKey, Inc.

Powered by Bookmarkify™

Welcome to our new LifeOnKey company blog. Our goal for this blog is to give you some insight on our company and the people behind the scenes who are working hard to give you the tools and services you need to take charge of your health and wellbeing – along with the health and wellbeing of those you love. But first I want to give you a little background on why I started this company.

My decision to found LifeOnKey was a very personal one. Five years ago my brother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer. He had several complications. And although he had doctors who were very expert in each in their specific medical fields – my brother-in-law had to make the real decisions. But how do you make these very important decisions without a comprehensive view of your medical information?

As a family, we really didn’t believe we had all of the relevant information about his medical history, let alone ways of understanding it. That’s when I knew I had to do something and solve this problem; a problem that other families face every day.

The more I researched the lack of empowerment we face as patients, I found that all of us are in the dark when it comes to our health. I have spent much time trying to solve this systemic problem and building a general solution. While doing so I realized that healthcare is the only vital part of our lives that we totally rely on others for the information we need to make decisions when it comes to our care.

If you think about it — we aren’t active participants in managing our health information in the same way we are when it comes to our finances, taxes, or any other important part of our life.

That’s why I wanted to build a comprehensive innovative solution that enables consumers to be in touch with their medical information, be empowered consumers and patients and enable all of us to make the best decisions regarding our health and the health of our loved ones.

So – I am very pleased to introduce LifeOnKey™.

What is LifeOnKey™?
LifeOnKey™ is a secure and easy to use personal health management system that allows you to assemble a health profile based on medical records from various providers. Plus, we’ve made sure to provide interactive health management tools to empower you to take control of your health.

One of the challenges of patient empowerment, is the widespread acceptance and use of the PHR. But it’s not just the patient that needs to buy into the benefits of having one. Doctors and other health care providers also need to embrace the use of PHRs-in order to acheive true patient empowerment. But such acceptance and use of personal health records doesn’t come without a full undertsanding of what they are, how they work, and the valuable service they provide in improving patient health and the overall delivery of care.I came across and interesting article the other day that was written for the American Academy of Family Physicians, “An Introduction to Personal Health Records.”Although it was written for physicians, it is a good primer on PHRs. I encourage you to read the full article but I wanted to highlight what I thought was the most important point of the article: the benefits of PHRs for you, your doctors and the health care system.Why PHRs Are Important for You and For Your Doctor• Empowerment of patients. PHRs let patients verify the information in their medical record and monitor health data about themselves (very useful in chronic disease management). PHRs also provide scheduling reminders for health maintenance services.• Improved patient-provider relationships. PHRs improve communication between patients and clinicians, allow documentation of interactions with patients and convey timely explanations of test results.• Increased patient safety. PHRs provide drug alerts, help identify missed procedures and services, and get important test results to patients rapidly. PHRs also give patients timely access to updated care plans.• Improved quality of care. PHRs enable continuous, comprehensive care with better coordination between patients, physicians and other providers.• More efficient delivery of care. PHRs help avoid duplicative testing and unnecessary services. They provide more efficient communication between patients and physicians (e.g., avoiding congested office phones).• Better safeguards on health information privacy. By giving patients control of access to their records, PHRs offer more selectivity in sharing of personal health information. The PCASSO (patient-centered access to secure systems online) study at the University of California-San Diego suggests that PHRs are more secure than paper records.• Bigger cost savings. Improved documentation brought about by PHRs can decrease malpractice costs. PHRs’ ability to reduce duplicative tests and services is a factor here, too. (Of course, there is a cost for setting up a PHR. The price varies widely, based on whether the physician pays for the service or directs patients to subscribe, and whether the system is Web-based or stand-alone.) Source: American Academy of Family Physicians, Family Practice Management.I hope this article has you thinking more about PHRs and how they can help empower you as a patient. But this is just the beginning. Stay tuned.
